pursuing, and the importance of engaging with
our identity as we build toward a more just world.
On the second day we heard from Artie
Schniederman, Mazkir of HDNA in 1967, Arieh
Azoulay, Mazkir of Habonim Morocco in 1955,
and Shula Smith and Leon Litvin, bogrim in Dror
Israel. Both Artie and Arieh spoke of the historical
connections between Habonim and Israel and the
ways that Zionism was present in their respective
movement experiences. It was fascinating to hear
Artie’s experience of the movement continuing to
choose Zionism during some very tumultuous
times for Israel and about Arieh’s experience
growing up in Morocco. Shula and Leon spoke
about unions and the work they are doing with
Dror Israel advocating for the rights of youth in
the workplace. At the end of day two we had a
new and more personal understanding of why
people choose Zionism today and in the past and
the ways that people strive for justice in Israeli
society.
Following the seminar we formed a va’ad of
madrichimot to create four peulot about Israel
and Zionism to be run for our chanichimot this
summer. The peulot, many of which were
inspired by the seminar, will help our chanichimot
engage with and expand their understanding of
Israel and Zionism in meaningful ways.
