MACHANEH MIRIAM (HDNA),
GRAPPLE WITH ALL THINGS
ISRAEL, ZIONISM, THE CONFLICT
AND THE JEWISH PEOPLE
On April 3rd and 4th 2021, the madrichimot of
Machaneh Miriam met with a range of speakers
to deepen their understanding of Israel, Zionism,
the conflict, and dilemmas of the Jewish people.
Our guest speakers all had different perspectives,
backgrounds and expertise. On the first day we
heard Sulaiman Khatib of Combatants for Peace,
Sondos Shebli of the Palestinian youth movement
Zimam, and Miriam Awad Morad, former Rakezet
Hadracha of the Arab Kenim in HaNoar HaOved
Ve’Halomed. All three speakers gave us a deeper
look into Arab and Palestinian identity and
Palestinian society. After day one of the seminar
we all left with many questions and thoughts
about how we have engaged with Israel and
Occupation up until now, and how our
perspectives can change to reflect our new
understandings. Some of the most interesting
points of the day included the complexities and
hardships of being Arab and growing up in Israel,
the ways that privilege impacts the way we view
the conflict and the answers to the conflict, the
social justice issues that Palestinian youth are
