few chaverim present, and advised a letter to this
publication. We are still waiting. This incident is only
worth mention as an indication of an attitude, and
one which is obviously very widespread. Newsletter
should be the forum in which chaverim discuss their
ideas on movement problems, general problems,
react to what is going on in the movement, and what
isn't and why. It should be a medium for the
exchange and clash of ideas, and thus foster thought
on the questions which face us.
What other functions should newsletter fulfill? To
inform, on matters within the movement, and on
Jewish Affairs at large? News and views on Israel?
Basic knowledge? It is too long since we have heard
the views of chaverim on what newsletter should
contain and we refuse to believe that these views
are non-existent. A chaver once said that newsletter
is the most important educational medium we have
in the movement. Is this true today? And if not, why
not?
This issue is being received by a considerable
number of Vatikim who do not subscribe to
Newsletter; in many cases they are new to the
Shichvah, and have not yet, perhaps, made its
acquaintance. The purpose of sending them this
issue is to remedy the defect and to ensure that they
have an opportunity of becoming subscribers. It is
important that Newsletter becomes again the
publication of Shichvat Vatikim; this will be so if it is
read by every Vatik and if vatikim will write to it, and
for it.
