schools, in our food, in our social streams, in our
languages.
But nowadays, discomfort is rarely asked for, as we have
become conditioned to the idea that seeking comfort is
needed and desirable. But if we return to our memories,
we understand that it will always be with us.
As such, we must learn to embrace our discomfort once
again, and to understand that it is an integral part of
who we are as a people – a messy, disunited people that
continues to maintain three opinions within two beings.
And as such, you must understand that, as a member of
this people, this is a part of you.
Understand that you escaped Egypt at the expense of its
people who drowned at sea.
Understand that you are commanded to slay Amalek
whilst being commanded not to commit murder.
Understand that you are the ancestors of Torquemada,
as much as you are his victims.
Understand that you are Queen Gudit as much as you
are Queen Athaliah.
Understand that you are Spinoza as much as the
community who issued his cherem.
