Persian Rhapsody

Ah, Persia of the thousand nights and one
Where many a timeless, magic tale was spun

To great Persepolis of ancient fame
In peace and bearing gifts the nations came

His trade the old tent maker deftly plied
And Sesame her gates flung open wide

The robbers’ cunning nothing could avail
Where Ali Baba’s destined to prevail

Scheherazade, a maiden meek and mild,
Her lord’s long, dark Arabian nights beguiled

And flying carpets woven at the loom
Transported men ere witches found their broom

The Rights of Nations Cyrus did decree,
A time of peace and fine prosperity

So what are you building there, my friends, at Qom?
                                                 Come, surely not a bomb!

                                                                                 Judith Yalon Fortus, November 2009
