Dear Shula,
I only have so much space in my bags and I’m trying to
fit everything in. What’s most important to bring with
me to Israel?
Love,

Hello unknown!
When I was making Aliyah I made the incredibly
unpopular opinion to fill my bags with only three
things: clothes/shoes, books, and kitchenware. I know,
it seems unreasonable to bring pots and pans with you,
but to tell the truth it gave me a lot of comfort to arrive
with the beginnings of a home.
So I suggest you do the same: Take a look at your
belongings and decide what will make you feel at
home. What are the things that bring you comfort and
joy? Don’t bring anything just because you should.
You’ll probably end up trashing it eventually.
And please don’t take the advice of my professor father
who told me to ditch my shoes and bring five different
versions of the Bible just in case you want to “check
references.”
Best of luck!
Shula
