Happy May Day Habo!!!
In 1884, an American convention of unions
decided to set May 1, 1886 as the date by which
they expected to achieve an eight-hour work day.
When companies and lawmakers refused,
workers all across the country prepared to strike.
Their anthem was a song called “Eight Hour” and
they demanded more humane work days.
Hundreds of thousands of workers took to the
streets in peaceful protests but police responded
violently and their demands were not met. In
Chicago, a city full of mostly immigrant workers
and tons of labor organizing, the clashes between
workers and the police escalated to the bloody
Haymarket Affair, which came to symbolize the
struggle for working people’s dignity and rights.

a holiday and a day of protest, a day to celebrate
labor and call for an end to exploitation.
